TEPCO CONSIDERS FILLING FUKUSHIMA REACTOR ONE FULLY WITH WATER IN JAPAN CCTV News

As the nuclear crisis continues in Japan, the operator of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant is considering filling Reactor-One with water. It’s part of an effort to artificially cool the core.

TEPCO has been dumping a massive amount of water into the reactor’s container. The liquid seepage is gradually forming ponds within the outer safety shell. Experts hope this process will fully immerse the vessel, making the outer shell a “water coffin,” and sealing the contaminated water inside.

TEPCO crews were injecting 6 tons of water every hour, as liquid levels filled half the shell by Saturday evening. TEPCO says about three-quarters of the fuel rods were damaged in last month’s earthquake and tsunami, the worst among the six reactors in Fukushima.

While the company stresses that filing the core is a main measure to prevent overheating, other experts have expressed concerns over contaminated water spilling out after the operation, since the reactors were not designed for this process.
