New Quakes Keep Hitting

New earthquakes have hit across Japan, the latest a 6.3 magnitude.

There have been 52 quakes with a magnitude of 6 or greater, since the initial quake of 9.0 that caused a tsunami. To date almost 28,000 people are dead or missing.

Japan raised the crisis level at its nuclear plant on Tuesday, from 5 to 7.

This is the highest level on the international scale for rating nuclear accidents, overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and is now on the severity level with the 1986, former Soviet Union, Chernobyl disaster.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan said in a Tuesday evening news conference, “All the reactors and the spent nuclear fuel pools zmust be brought under control at all costs, so that we can prevent a further expansion of the damage.”

The government had added five communities the day before, to a list of places in which people should leave to avoid long-term radiation exposure. This extended the 12-mile radius already cleared around the plant.
